VAT Calculator adds VAT to a net price or removes VAT from a gross price, showing the net amount, VAT amount, and gross amount together. It works for VAT, GST, or any percentage-based sales tax, calculated locally in your browser.

How it works

Choose whether to add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount, enter the rate, and the tool applies the matching formula—multiplying for adding, dividing by (1 + rate) for removing—to show all three figures.

Benefits

  • Handles both adding and removing VAT in one tool
  • Shows net, VAT, and gross amounts side by side
  • Works for any percentage-based tax rate
  • Calculates instantly without uploading pricing data

Use cases

  • Add VAT to a quote before sending an invoice
  • Back out the VAT portion from a receipt total
  • Check reduced or zero VAT rates for specific goods
  • Verify a supplier's VAT breakdown on a bill

Best practices

  • Confirm which VAT rate applies to your specific goods or services
  • Use remove VAT when you only have the tax-inclusive total
  • Keep net and gross figures clearly labeled on invoices
  • Recheck rates periodically as VAT rules can change

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying a gross amount by the VAT rate directly to find VAT
  • Mixing up net and gross when entering the amount
  • Assuming all goods share the same VAT rate
  • Rounding intermediate figures before the final calculation

Privacy

Amounts and VAT rates are calculated locally in your browser. VAT Calculator does not upload or store your pricing information on any server.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between adding and removing VAT?
Adding VAT starts from a net (pre-tax) amount and calculates the gross price. Removing VAT starts from a gross (tax-included) amount and works backward to find the net price and tax portion.
How is VAT removed from a gross amount?
The gross amount is divided by (1 + VAT rate as a decimal) to get the net amount, then the VAT amount is the gross minus that net figure.
Can I use this for sales tax or GST instead of VAT?
Yes. The math for adding or removing a percentage-based tax is the same regardless of what the tax is called in your country.
Does the calculator support different VAT rates?
Yes. Enter any rate, including standard, reduced, or zero-rated percentages used in your jurisdiction.
Why do net + VAT and gross − VAT give the same numbers?
Both directions describe the same relationship between net, VAT, and gross amounts; switching direction just changes which figure you start from.
Is my pricing data uploaded anywhere?
No. All VAT calculations happen locally in your browser and are never sent to a server.
